Dr. Lisa Riegel organized Ohio Department of Education's Economic Education Summit for two years, so she understands the complex relationship between education and business. She also worked as an administrator at an Ohio Career Center where she was in charge of business and community outreach. She is a co-founder of an organization that seeks to close the soft skills gap and is in charge of all content development related to soft skill development and measurement. Durable skills, soft skills, essential skills continue to be at the heart of discussion related to workforce readiness, and businesses do not believe education is closing the gap. A comprehensive soft skills development program can show employers educators are not only listening, but also making sure students have the skills they need to get and retain a job. While everyone is talking about soft skills and their impact on academic, personal and professional success, they are not taught, measured and supported in a strategic way. This presentation will connect the dots so participants can leave with action steps to start building a soft skills culture in their programming and partnerships.

As the 2024 SC CCR ELA Standards are implemented across educational settings, it is imperative for CTE instructors to understand the relationship between literacy skills and students’ success in the workforce. Our sessions will focus on how the new standards integrate essential literacy competencies with CTE curricula, thereby supporting CTE teachers in fostering an environment where students not only gain technical expertise but also develop the critical reading, writing, and communication skills needed for success in postsecondary education and the modern workforce. The 2024 SC CCR ELA Standards emphasize the development of key literacy skills—such as reading comprehension, writing proficiency, and effective communication—that are essential across all career pathways. CTE instructors often teach students who are at various levels of literacy development, and integrating these standards into CTE instruction provides a clear, actionable framework for improving student outcomes in both technical and academic areas. By attending this session, CTE teachers will gain a deeper understanding of how the new standards can be woven into their existing curricula. They will learn practical strategies for incorporating literacy instruction that aligns with their industry-specific content, helping students bridge the gap between technical skills and the soft skills required by employers. This integration is not only relevant but necessary for ensuring that students are truly prepared for success in the workforce or in further academic pursuits. Our sessions will also highlight strategies for embedding literacy across all CTE content areas, with a focus on real-world applications. From interpreting technical manuals to crafting professional emails or delivering presentations, the integration of literacy standards into CTE classrooms enhances students’ readiness for both higher education and their careers. These competencies are critical to student success and will contribute to the overall mission of Career and Technical Education to prepare students for life after high school, whether they choose to enter the workforce directly or pursue further education.

Relevance: Motivation is highly relevant to Career and Technical Education (CTE) because it directly influences student engagement, skill development, and career readiness. CTE programs prepare students for real-world careers by combining academic knowledge with hands-on, technical skills. To succeed in these programs, students must be motivated to learn complex skills, persist through challenges, and apply their knowledge in practical settings. Understanding motivation helps CTE educators design instruction that fosters both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, ensuring students see the value and relevance of their education in achieving future career goals.
Value: Educators need to understand the science of motivation because it directly impacts student engagement, learning, and achievement. Motivation influences how students approach challenges, persist through difficulties, and take ownership of their learning. Research in educational psychology highlights the importance of intrinsic motivation—driven by curiosity and personal interest—over extrinsic motivation, such as rewards or punishments. When teachers understand the science of motivation, they can create environments that foster deeper, more sustained motivation.
Presenter knowledge & experience: Tammy Pawloski has led more than 2500 professional learning events for teachers, school leaders, and stakeholders. She understands the challenges and opportunities of teaching, and has devoted the last 25 years to the study of children of poverty—why they struggle and which strategies have the greatest impact. She holds the Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina, and serves as Director of the Center of Excellence to Prepare Teachers of Children of Poverty at Francis Marion University. Topic Relevance: Since COVID, chronic absenteeism in public schools has doubled, rising from 15% in 2019 to 30% (~15 million students) in 2024. Absences lower GPAs, increase dropout risks, and enhance the likelihood of negative post-graduation outcomes such as unemployment, substance abuse, and legal issues. Teachers also face added strain, adjusting curricula to accommodate absent students, disrupting lesson flow. This crisis is particularly severe in economically disadvantaged communities.
Participant Value: Federal attendance programs have been developed and proven to consistently improve student attendance, but require significant resources, limiting accessibility for many schools. Schools attempting independent programs often find them costly, complex, and ineffective due to delayed or inconsistent rewards. This session will highlight a proven, research-backed attendance reward system that is:
• 100% free for schools, students, parents, and teachers • Seamlessly integrated into existing attendance procedures • Designed to engage parents in fostering strong attendance habits
By implementing this system, schools can improve attendance, boost student morale and performance, and potentially increase funding opportunities.
Presenter Knowledge & Experience: Having witnessed the long-term consequences of absenteeism among family, friends, and students, I pursued solutions while earning my Ph.D. in Psychology. Over the past five years, my team has developed and refined a data-driven attendance improvement system, collaborating with over 120 administrators, 60 teachers, 500 students, and 75 parents to help design and refine the platform. This extensive engagement ensures our approach is effective, scalable, and ready for implementation in diverse educational settings.
Relevance of topic: Addresses CTE data entered and submitted for accountability purposes. Value: Provides tools to assist in making data-driven decisions and encourages engagement beyond the collection of data. Presenter Knowledge: Staff members are both CTE data analysts for SCDE.
