Durable skills, soft skills, essential skills continue to be at the heart of discussion related to workforce readiness, and businesses do not believe education is closing the gap. A comprehensive soft skills development program can show employers educators are not only listening, but also making sure students have the skills they need to get and retain a job. While everyone is talking about soft skills and their impact on academic, personal and professional success, they are not taught, measured and supported in a strategic way. This presentation will connect the dots so participants can leave with action steps to start building a soft skills culture in their programming and partnerships.

As the 2024 SC CCR ELA Standards are implemented across educational settings, it is imperative for CTE instructors to understand the relationship between literacy skills and students’ success in the workforce. Our sessions will focus on how the new standards integrate essential literacy competencies with CTE curricula, thereby supporting CTE teachers in fostering an environment where students not only gain technical expertise but also develop the critical reading, writing, and communication skills needed for success in postsecondary education and the modern workforce. The 2024 SC CCR ELA Standards emphasize the development of key literacy skills—such as reading comprehension, writing proficiency, and effective communication—that are essential across all career pathways. CTE instructors often teach students who are at various levels of literacy development, and integrating these standards into CTE instruction provides a clear, actionable framework for improving student outcomes in both technical and academic areas. By attending this session, CTE teachers will gain a deeper understanding of how the new standards can be woven into their existing curricula. They will learn practical strategies for incorporating literacy instruction that aligns with their industry-specific content, helping students bridge the gap between technical skills and the soft skills required by employers. Relevance: Motivation is highly relevant to Career and Technical Education (CTE) because it directly influences student engagement, skill development, and career readiness. CTE programs prepare students for real-world careers by combining academic knowledge with hands-on, technical skills. To succeed in these programs, students must be motivated to learn complex skills, persist through challenges, and apply their knowledge in practical settings. Understanding motivation helps CTE educators design instruction that fosters both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, ensuring students see the value and relevance of their education in achieving future career goals.
Value: Educators need to understand the science of motivation because it directly impacts student engagement, learning, and achievement. Motivation influences how students approach challenges, persist through difficulties, and take ownership of their learning. Research in educational psychology highlights the importance of intrinsic motivation—driven by curiosity and personal interest—over extrinsic motivation, such as rewards or punishments. When teachers understand the science of motivation, they can create environments that foster deeper, more sustained motivation.
Presenter knowledge & experience: Tammy Pawloski has led more than 2500 professional learning events for teachers, school leaders, and stakeholders. The topic "Resilient CTE Centers: Building and Retaining High-Impact CTE Teams" is highly relevant to the Career and Technology Education (CTE) field because resilient teams are the backbone of thriving CTE programs. As CTE initiatives bridge the gap between education and workforce needs, building a stable, adaptable, and high-performing team is crucial to delivering high-quality instruction and maintaining strong industry partnerships.
For participants, this session offers tangible value by addressing common challenges such as educator burnout, high turnover, and the need for continuous adaptation to evolving labor market demands. Administrators will gain insights into fostering a supportive culture, developing professional growth opportunities, and creating a resilient infrastructure that attracts and retains top CTE talent—ultimately leading to improved student outcomes and stronger community connections.. The presenter has 40 years of education experience working at the elementary, middle, high school, and district level as a teacher, instructional coach, director of federal and accountability programs.
The topic is very relevant as it is what I teach daily. The value to participants will be an insight into a different cluster that is new to CTE but an age-old concept. I have an Associate degree in Supply Chain Management, I have been officially teaching for three years although I have been employed by my school for eight years. I have worked as a Warehouse Manager for eight years and worked in a manufacturing plant for four years.
The presentation includes information that is helpful to new teachers that are either going into their first year of teaching or are just new to the field of education. The information provided helps give pointers on things that first year teachers have had questions/concerns about in the past. The information provided will help give the participants some ideas when certain situations/topics arise for them. There will also be a chance at the end of the session for participants to ask questions of me to answer. Participants will also be provided my contact information, so they are able to reach out at a later date if they need advice on something that wasn't included in the presentation.

This integration is not only relevant but necessary for ensuring that students are truly prepared for success in the workforce or in further academic pursuits. Our sessions will also highlight strategies for embedding literacy across all CTE content areas, with a focus on real-world applications. From interpreting technical manuals to crafting professional emails or delivering presentations, the integration of literacy standards into CTE classrooms enhances students’ readiness for both higher education and their careers. These competencies are critical to student success and will contribute to the overall mission of Career and Technical Education to prepare students for life after high school, whether they choose to enter the workforce directly or pursue further education.

Topic Relevance: Since COVID, chronic absenteeism in public schools has doubled, rising from 15% in 2019 to 30% (~15 million students) in 2024. Absences lower GPAs, increase dropout risks, and enhance the likelihood of negative post-graduation outcomes such as unemployment, substance abuse, and legal issues. Teachers also face added strain, adjusting curricula to accommodate absent students, disrupting lesson flow. This crisis is particularly severe in economically disadvantaged communities.
Participant Value: Federal attendance programs have been developed and proven to consistently improve student attendance, but require significant resources, limiting accessibility for many schools. Schools attempting independent programs often find them costly, complex, and ineffective due to delayed or inconsistent rewards. This session will highlight a proven, research-backed attendance reward system that is:
• 100% free for schools, students, parents, and teachers • Seamlessly integrated into existing attendance procedures • Designed to engage parents in fostering strong attendance habits
By implementing this system, schools can improve attendance, boost student morale and performance, and potentially increase funding opportunities.
Presenter Knowledge & Experience: Having witnessed the long-term consequences of absenteeism among family, friends, and students, I pursued solutions while earning my Ph.D. in Psychology. Over the past five years, my team has developed and refined a data-driven attendance improvement system, collaborating with over 120 administrators, 60 teachers, 500 students, and 75 parents to help design and refine the platform. This extensive engagement ensures our approach is effective, scalable, and ready for implementation in diverse educational settings.
Relevance of topic: Addresses CTE data entered and submitted for accountability purposes. Value: Provides tools to assist in making data-driven decisions and encourages engagement beyond the collection of data. Presenter Knowledge: Staff members are both CTE data analysts for SCDE.

The relevance of stackable, industry-recognized credentials is tremendous to the CTE field, as degrees alone are no longer enough to prepare students for today’s workforce. With 92% of U.S. jobs requiring mastery of digital skills—including Adobe Suite, Microsoft Office, Google Docs, cybersecurity, web development, and coding—it’s essential to equip students with tools that ensure their success and give them a competitive edge. Alarmingly, over one-third of college graduates enter the job market without these critical competencies.
The value to participants is great, as they will explore how stackable, industry-recognized, and proficiency-based certifications can bridge this critical skills gap. Participants will learn actionable strategies to empower learners to validate and demonstrate their expertise in essential digital competencies, setting them up for success in higher education and their careers.

One critical economic challenge facing South Carolina is the pressing need to enhance workforce development and training programs to align with the demands of a rapidly evolving economy. As automation and advanced technologies continue to reshape industries, traditional jobs are disappearing at an alarming rate. Consequently, there is a significant and growing demand for skilled workers proficient in specialized areas such as technology, healthcare, advanced manufacturing, and pet services.
To tackle this issue, the state government has initiated a variety of proactive measures, including job training programs and apprenticeships, aimed at equipping individuals with the necessary skills to thrive in the jobs of tomorrow. These initiatives often involve strategic partnerships with local businesses, ensuring that training reflects real-world needs and market conditions.
In addition to workforce development, significant attention has been directed toward enhancing educational access, particularly in underserved rural areas, as a means of combating poverty and addressing economic inequality. This comprehensive approach aims not only to foster individual success but also to stimulate broader economic growth across the state.

When CTE instructors are trying to get their students ready to complete the ServSafe Food Handler's certification a great deal of time can be lost trying to keep their students all on the same timeline and keeping students on track while they navigate the modules. Getting the students' accounts set up is only one of the first steps to administering the certification in a timely manner.
Understanding the useful tools of the ServSafe website and how to navigate it to help your students is a key factor in completing the certification. I would like to go over the website in depth to help instructors understand how to fully navigate the website. There is a lot of information and a step by step guide would help instructors know functions and how to use them.
